22 Sep Autumn
Autumn oficially beguins on the autumnal equinox, the 22nd or 23rd of September.
Here you’ve got some interesting facts about this season.
The turning of the leaves
Due to the low temperatures and fewer hours of sunlight a chemical change is triggered in tree leaves, that’s the reason they turn into different colours such as orange, red or yellow.
Autumn and Fall
We think of “fall” as the North American version of “autumn” but it was common in England during the 17th century as a way of shortening the phrase “fall of the leave”. The word “autumn” came from the French word “automne” and it wasn’t common until the 18th century.
Until 1500, autumn was called “harvest”.
Health
Heart attacks decrease after the Autumn equinox, researchers believe that this is because we get an extra hour of sleep and therefore we’re less stressed.
Women lose more hair in autumn because there’s no need to protect it from sunlight.
It’s also said that people who are born in autumn tend to live longer.
Animal preparations
Animals prepare for winter by gathering food, some birds migrate to warmer areas and animals grow thicker hair.
